What does a duck or fishing pond cost to build?
It comes down to size, depth, and whether the soil will hold water without a clay liner. Sites that need imported clay or a liner cost more than sites where we can core out good material on the property. We test before we quote so the number holds.
How long until it holds water?
Construction on a typical farm pond runs one to three weeks. Filling depends on your source — watershed runoff, a spring, or a well. A watershed-fed pond usually fills over a wet season, not overnight.
Do I need a permit for a private pond?
A small upland pond that doesn't dam a stream or touch wetlands is usually straightforward. Dam a blue-line stream or disturb wetlands and you're into state and federal review. We check what your site actually is before we promise anything.
Will it hold water on my soil?
That's the first question we answer, not the last. We dig test pits and look at what's under your topsoil. If the site won't hold on its own, we tell you what it takes — clay core, liner, or a different location on the property.
